The whole process of applying for disability benefits can take at least six months. If your application is denied initially and you are forced to appeal, the process can take much longer.

This is because the Social Security Administration (SSA) considers that older people may be less likely to fully recover from a serious medical condition and be able to return to work in a previous job. It may also be harder for them to learn new skills.
